Outstripping The Law
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) MIAMI, July 14. Frank Lee Gleen, aged 30, outran a policeman today and by so doing won an acquittal in court. Glenn, a sprinter and football player when he was in high school, had told Judge Everett Dudley that he was “just passing through” when policemen raiding gamblers in a Miami bar, arrested him. “If I'd been gambling,” Glenn said, “I would’ve run like the rest of them, and the cop would never have caught me.” “We’ll just see,” the judge said. The Court was adjourned to a nearby park, where Glenn and the arresting officer, Deputy Vernon James, aged 23, squatted in sprinters’ stance at the football field goal line. For six seconds, Glenn was a fugitive from justice in the person of the panting, perspiring Deputy James, who saw nothing but Glenn’s back a dozen yards ahead of him up to the 50-yard finishing line. “Not guilty,” the Judge ruled.
