Outward Freight To Cost More
(New Zealand Preet Aeeoclation)
WELLINGTON, July 14.
An increase of 5 per cent in the outward freight rates for general cargo will be made by Continental, Scandinavian and British shipping lines from October 1.
This was decided after; discussions between the! New Zealand Conference Lines and the Aus- j tralian and New Zealand I Merchants and Shippers’ Association. The rates for motor vehicles will remain unchanged. Explaining the need for an increase, the lines emphasised to the association that
there had been a major increase in costs since the last adjustment in the outward trade in November of last year. It was said that there had been marked rises in stevedoring and crew costs, and that it was unlikely there would be a lull in the upward pressure on costs in the foreseeable future. There had been similar cost increases for shipbuilding, repairing, fuel, and stores.
