Footballers depend for their success, to a considerable extent, on footwork. We heard the other day about a young man who should surely have a fine future in the game. He and a friend decided, in the early hours of a Sunday morning, to drive to Greymouth for a representative Rugby League match to be played there. Before long, they were on the road and even the fact that the driver had owned his car for only a brief period did not deter him from taking on the Stygian darkness and the intricacies of the Otira Gorge. Half-way up the moun-
tain, they went sideways on an icy stretch of road. The passenger got out and pushed; as soon as forward movement was certain, the driver took off to the top of the hill. The passenger found it was none to easy to go up by foot and after a while he was somewhat surprised to be blinded by torchlight: the driver was out, a search-party of one. The driver displayed his full virtuosity when they arrived at Greymouth. There was nowhere for them to rest their weary persons in the hours before the game began. So he rudely awakened the occupant of one room, and
asked him down for a drink. They can do that, in some places. The blearyeyed guest, foolish enough to accept this hospitality, had taken no more than a sip when he discovered that his host had disappeared. He shot off to his bedroom. But it was too late. The motorist was in determined, and—having regard to his size—complete possession of the bed so recently vacated. It wasn’t much compensation for the rightful owner of the bed to be reminded, later, that he hadn’t met his obligation to shout
