Brass Bands Post

Mr S. Hobbs of Christchurch, the secretarytreasurer of the Canterbury Provincial Brass Bands Association has been appointed secretary of the New Zealand Brass Bands’ Association.

Mr Hobbs did most of the organising for the world trip by the National Band and the new position will extend his present activities. Mr Hobbs joined the Salvation Army Band in Christchurch in 1926 at the age of 13. He has played for most Christchurch bands over the years, in particular Derry’s band, where he has been conductor and president. He has been secretary-treasurer of the Canterbury centre for the last eight years. Mr Hobbs thinks that the most important aspect of his new job will be to encourage brass bands in the smaller centres.

In 1967 he established the schools’ brass bands’ festival in Christchurch and believes that no other city in the world has anything like this. Mr Hobbs, who is 56, no longer plays in bands: he finds his time is completely taken up with administration. The New Zealand Brass Bands' Association is run from Christchurch so Mr Hobbs has had plenty of contact with it over the years.
