ICE TOO THIN
Skating Is Postponed Because of poor Ice conditions, the national long track speed championships, which were to have been held on the Manorbum Dam, Alexandra, on Thursday and Friday, have been postponed until Monday and Tuesday of next week. “There is only Ilin of ice on the top basin of the dam,” the convenor of the New Zealand Ice Skating Association’s speed committee (Mr J. H. Havenaar, of Christchurch) said yesterday. “We need at least 3in.” On the middle basin, where the championships were normally held, the ice was not thick enough to walk on and it had not been possible to take measurements, Mr Havenaar said. A decision on whether to continue with the championships next week will be made tomorrow evening. The New Zealand short track championships are scheduled to be held at the same venue on Saturday and, although no decision has yet been reached, it seems likely that these too will be postponed.
However. the national figure skating championships will be held on an artificially frozen rink.
