Industrial Anarchy Facing Country
(New Zealand press Association)
ROTORUA, July 12.
New Zealand was beginning to face industrial anarchy, said the president of the Associated Chambers of Commerce (Mr A. M. Simm) last night.
Addressing a chamber dinner, he said one of the greatest difficulties facing the Associated Chambers was industrial trouble. “I don’t think a day passes when I do not have discussions on this problem.” Mr Simm said the Associated Chambers had always conceded that wage increases were a matter for the Employers’ Federation to concern itself with. In the present situation, however, there was a need for unilateral action to find a level at which a halt could be I made.
He expressed fears that rep-
| resentations being made in I London by the Deputy Prime Minister (Mr Marshall) in an effort to gain protection for New Zealand should Britain enter the Common Market, might be wasted. “Whatever Mr Marshall is doing in London, he might find the rpg pulled from under his feet,” Mr Simm said. He suggested the Federation of Labour should give support in broad principle to proposals made by the Employers’ Federation to replace existing conciliation and arbitration machinery. “We must be able to sit down and discuss something in detail,” he said. “One thing we do not want in this country is industrial i
anarchy. That is what we are beginning to face. We don’t want this at a period of prosperity.”
