Lower Sixth Certificate

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, July 10. Regulations to the Lower Sixth Form Certificate have been amended to make provision for the award to be made on a single-subject basis, not as as present on the basis of over-all achieve ment in four subjects. This was announced today by the Minister of Education (Mr Taiboys), who said that the new basis of the award would ensure better consist? ency and good standards in all subjects. “It is a natural consequence of the introduction two years ago of School Certificate as a single-subject award," he said. Pupils still had to take no fewer than four subjects, but would be awarded the Lower Sixth Form Certificate only in each subject approved by the Director-General of Education.

Mr Taiboys said that the changes had been approved by the Post Primary Teachers’ Association and secondary school principals.
