‘Have To Be Stopped’
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, July 9. Strikes, protests and demonstrations were becoming too popular and should be stopped, Parliament’s Chairman of Committees, (Mr A. E. Allen) said tonight in the Budget debate. “If the people indulging in this sort of thing think It is going to build a nation, let me tell them they’re not going to get anywhere,” Mr Allen said. “This sort of thing is becoming too popular . . . it’s time it was stopped.” Mr Allen said he would, rather be “dead in a ditch” than deny people the right to assemble freely “But I have the right to expect these people to observe the rule of law.” He did not deny young people the right to march—“but in places set aside for those purposes.” Mr Allen said: “My constituents should be able to shop in Queen Street on Friday night without being molested by unkempt, uncouth, undisciplined, uninteresting and, in most cases, useless louts.” If people could not control “these people,” the Government would have to —even if it overspent the police vote.
