Sire Of Year Award
The New Zealand Angus “Sire of the Year” for 1969-70 is Black Bollard of Bamolby, owned by Wallace Johnstone, Ltd, of Te Kuiti. The “Sire of the Year” award was presented at Dannevirke this week by Mr W. Farquarson, representing Thomas Borthwick and Sons, who donate this award —sBoo in prize money and a gold trophy. The trophy goes to the owner of the sire whose progeny gained the most points, under the rules of the competition, at agricultural and pastoral
shows throughout New Zealand, and the prize money goes to Angus exhibitors who gain the most points at shows, irrespective of sire. Wallace Johnstone, Ltd, were winners of both the prize money for most points at shows, and the first place for the trophy. In addition, they also obtained third placing with Baker 631 of Puketutu. The over-all winner, Black Bollard of Barnolby, was imported into New Zealand from Scotland, in 1965. His sire, Black Bellringer of Thorn, was a son of the world-famous Jewvil Eric of Manorhill. Black Bollard was fourth in last year’s competition.
Second place in the trophy and prize money sections went to I. D. Parsons, Waitotara, with Edwin of Hungerford, which is also a son of Jewvil Eric of Manorhill.
Third placed bull in the trophy section was Wallace Johnstone, Ltd’s Baker 631 of Puketutu. Fourth place in the trophy went to J. B. Hickman, Blenheim, with Princibet of Kinermony. This sire stood third in last year's trophy competition. Mr Hickman was also third in the prize money section. Fourth in the prize money section was Messrs E. H. and T. B. Parker, of Matamata.
