LORD PRIVY SEAL FINED
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) LONDON, July 9. The Leader of the House of Lords (Lord Jellicoe) has been fined £75 on a drinking and driving charge. Lord Jellicoe, who is Lord Privy Seal—an appointment held without portfolio in the Cabinet—pleaded guilty to driving with too much alcohol in his blood, and was also banned from driving for a year.
He was stopped by the police in March, after making a right turn which caused an oncoming police car to brake to avoid a collision, a London magistrate’s court was told. He consequently failed two breath-analyser tests, and a blood sample showed 133 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood. The permitted level is 80 milligrams.
Lord Jellicoe was not in court because of urgent Parliamentary business, but his counsel said he had drunk only a normal amount of alcohn) while dining with friends, and had no idea he had drunk beyond the permitted level for drivers.
