Questions
From a River Road reader: I intend to build a car port as an extension from my house across a shingle driveway. Can I put treated timber straight into the ground for posts or must I put in a concrete footing? Yes, treated timber such as radiata is suitable for use in the ground provided it has undergone ground retention treatment. Timber treated to this retention is identified by its greenish colour—usually a deeper green than interior and exterior retentions—and the hammer brand “X” together with the preservation plant number on one end of the timber. Treated timber of this type is being used for fence posts, power poles, decking on the Lyttelton wharves and was recently used on extensions to the main Selwyn River bridge.
