Male Rubber Workers Support Women
One hundred and fifty male rubber workers at the Empire Rubber Mills decided yesterday to support the 50 women who are trying to get a $3.50 increase in their weekly bonus. They also decided to contribute a voluntary levy to help the women, who have been on strike for a fortnight.
The secretary of the Canterbury Rubber Workers’ Union (Mr B. F. Dacre) said later that the men’s decision had been made unanimously at a stop-work meeting which started at 8 a.m. This meeting had also been attended by the women, who had returned to work afterwards so that negotiations between union and management representatives could be renewed.
When these negotiations were unsuccessful, the women resumed their strike until 8 a.m. tomorrow, when they will again return for long enough to permit further talks. Mr Dacre said the women held a secret ballot yesterday, at the insistence of himself and other union officials, and the ballot had endorsed the strike action by 45 votes to two. This, said Mr Dacre,
was an effective reply to recent remarks by the mill’s general manager (Mr S. M. Betty).
