N.Z. Games Bid Firm

(N.Z.P.A. Stag Correspondent; EDINBURGH, July 6. New Zealand will not withdraw its application for the 1974 Commonwealth Games if the African nations say they will not send their teams to Christchurch, according to Mr C. L. S. Cross, chairman of the New Zealand Olympic and Commonwealth Games committee in an interview today.

“We won’t withdraw the application if ’ the Africans say they are not going to

come,” he said. “If threats and pressures on the basis of political considerations are going to break up the games it is better they break up anyway.

“These games are meant to be a family gathering of the Commonwealth and if through threats of boycotts and suspensions they lose this family nature then if is better to forget about them because they are not going to serve their purpose.” Earlier, Mr Cross said that New Zealand would very much like to hold the games in 1974. “The way we see it now, it is New Zealand’s turn to hold the games.” The Christchurch delegation lobbying for the games in 1974 last evening showed its special proinotional film to about 250 Scottish people. It hopes to open soon a small shop which will contain Christchurch promotion material
