Two-day Horse Event Popular

Cold winds marred a successful two-day-event run by the junior committee of the Canterbury area of the Horse Society at Riccarton Racecourse during the week-end. The racecourse was an ideal place for the event which attracted 42 competitors, and it could become a popular annual day. The first day consisted of dressage and show-jumping and in the open pony class, Jenny Shand on Ricochet was in the lead with a score of 78.99 penalties, followed by Jan McKenzie on Guy Fawkes with 83.49 and Ann Wightman on Gay Prince With 84.-

Mrs S. Sampson on Morning Spirit held a good lead in the novice class for horses with 63.5. As her other horse. Blythe Spirit which was second, and Cushla Bennett on Forty Winks who was fourth, were elimin-v ated in the show jumping, Mary Watkinson on Mousetrap moved to second place with 78 penalties. Christine Killey on Gai Cheval was third with 84.49.

Only 0.50 separated I. Bell on Condor and Mary Watkinson on Beau de LAire after the dressage but Bell went in to a 5.50 lead when Mary Watkinson knocked a rail down in the show jumping. Jane Inglis on Acapulco was in third place with 87 penalties. The steeplechase phase in the pony class caused three eliminations, one being the leader, Ricochet, while Black Mischief, ridden by Ross Wheeler was the only pony without any penalties. Ann Wightman from Rangiora, who was celebrating her fourteenth birthday, won the whole event on Gay Prince by 0.49 from Robyn Harvey riding Moana. The cross country course was well built and interesting, and over-all was a credit to the course planners, Mrs A. Crowther and Mr I. Bell, and their team of helpers. Morning Spirit maintained Saturday s lead jumping well throughout in the novice class for horses with Mousetrap also keeping his second place. The steeplechase phase in the open class provided some hair-raising moments as tired horses completed their second rounds, the best round in this class being Jane Inglis on Acapulco who gained 22 bonus points, with Bell on Condor next with 19 bonus paints. Bell went on to win the event for the second year, only this time on a different horse. Condor, owned jointly by Mrs B. Blackie and Bell, showed what a really versatile horse he is by gaining the champion hack and hunter awards as well as being an A grade jumper. The well-known Hunters Moon broke down after the steeplechase phase.
