One-man Shows Open This Week
Colette Rands, the French-born painter who is to open her first; Christchurch exhibition in the C.S.A. gallery on Friday, describes her work as being about ‘■the land, the light, and the night—plus the containing vision of perception.”
Mrs Rands, who has lived in New Zealand since 1963, moved to Christchurch recently from Wellington. She has had one-man exhibitions in Auckland, Wellington and Hamilton, and has had work in several touring shows, but her C.S.A. show will be the first opportunity for Christchurch gallerygoers to see more than one of her paintings. She paints in oils, using layers of paint “applied in thin glazes and scumblings to build up completeness.” The paintings have many
layers of colours—“some left to shimmer through, others allowed only to alter the quality of blackness or dark-, ness—that is, to keep it I alive." Mrs Rands likens: them to “a hill at midnight.: It is green during the day,] and one still senses this in the magic of the night.” CANTERBURY’S MOODS Another one-man exhibi-l tion opening in the C.S.A. i gallery this week is likely to arouse wider than usual interest. This is a collection 1 of paintings of Canterbury; in all its moods and seasons by the Christchurch artist,. W. A. Sutton. Mr Sutton, senior lecturer; in art at Ham. is one of New Zealand’s best-known artists, and his paintings have appeared in many group exhibitions in Christchurch. But this will be his first oneman show in his home city. The private opening will be on Saturday, and the show will be open to the public i from Sunday.
