Rugby Riot “A Cause For Shame”

(From T. P. McLEAN) KIMBERLEY, June 29. South African newspapers devoted large space in news and pictures to the rioting after the All Blacks’ match against Griqualand West at Kimberley on Saturday.

The “Rand Daily Mail” said the event was a cause for shame. Something more than the normal emotions aroused by Rugby was simmering at the stadium, the newspaper said. It was understandable that non-whites would identify with a team which demonstrated by its composition that it held no brief for apartheid. That was why non-whites rushed on to the field to pay tribute to a man they regarded as one of themselves. “What followed was inexcusable,” the “Mail” said. “Eye-witnesses agreed that it was a few white spectators

who started the brawl. In the long run it is South Africa itself which must share the blame for this deplorable incident. “By making a fetish of race we create our own antagonism. In the short term the essential duty is to see that such passion is not aroused again during the tour.”
