Course Double To Riccarton Horses
Ribaldo and Sony combined successfully for Riccarton stables in the on-course double at Washdyke on Saturday. Ribaldo, a wellffrown Ribotlight-Fleur gelding trained by J. L. Barr for Mr C. L. Austin of View Hill, made a successful start to his racing career by winning the Otaio Maiden Stakes, at odds of more than 32 to one.
The Riccarton apprentice. G A Jackson, brought Ribaldo forward from the fourth line to challenge for the lead just Inside the furlong, and he ran it out strongly to win by a length and a half. Sony, in the hands of the Riccarton apprentice D E Reed, led for the last five furlongs of a mile and 35 yards for an easy win in the Strathallan Hack Handicap. Messrs D. Leslie and D. A. Uren’s Summertime entire won by two lengths from Colbrodor. in his second race from R. B. Taggart’s stable. The Ribaldo—Sony combination paid $198.50 for $l. Those who chose Colbrodor—the sixteenth favourite of 18—as their second-leg fancy received $340.30 for $1 Successful Switch Deep Cove, which the season's j leading trainer. R J. Cochrane, prepares for Mr C. C. Stevens, made a successful switch back, from cross-counlry racing to; hurdling in the Triford Mem-' orial Hurdles A. Cowan, who had Deep Cove' in touch with the pace all the way, took the Gore-trained jumper forward to join. Maliron in front going to the last Hight, where he put in the L.tter jump to land slightly ahead. But he had to be ridden allout in the last few yards to hold off Maliron, which rallied again and ran him to a nose. Pee Wee picked up several places in the last half-mile to finish third. Tulson did likewise for fourth. but both were soundly beaten. Well-deserved Win Reefton Queen, which had been racing consistently but not very profitably, gained a welldeserved win in the colours of Mr R K. McDonald and her Ashburton trainer, J Lalor, when she outran the hack sprinters in the Washdyke Handicap. Reefton Queen led the chase after the win favourite. Find It, till the straight entrance, closed quickly on her Washdyke rival just inside the furlong and battled it out gamely to win by half a neck. Stormbell, the eleventh favourite of 13, made ground for
third but was three lengths hack, a length ahead of .Moranski, second-last on the home turn. Outside of Find It the fancied runners were well beaten. The place favourite. Willie’s Pride, ran twelfth, one place behind Jodema. the third fancy each way.
