Tunnelling Halted

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 28. Tunnelling work on the face of the l}-mile Poutu tunnel in the Tongariro power scheme has been halted because of large quantities of water and difficult conditions, the Ministry of Works reported today. Before tunnelling is continued, the drainage system for the tunnel must be increased and brought right up to the face, the Ministry said. Started in July, 1969, the concrete-lined tunnel, 16ft 6in by 16ft 6in, will divert water from the Tongariro River along the Poutu canal to Lake Rotoaira. So far, 5457 feet of the tunInel have been driven.
