WHITING AWARD
Joint Winners Announced
On the recommendations of its Drama Panel, the Arts Council of Great Britain is to offer the 1969 John Whiting Award jointly to Howard Brenton for his work throughout the year, including such plays as “Revenge” 1 (first performed at the Royal Court Theatre Upstairs in September 1969) and “Christie in Love” (commissioned and first produced by Portable Theatre at the Oval Theatre in November, 1969 and subsequently toured by them throughout the country), and the Freehold Company in respect of its version of “Antigone,” first produced at the Arts Laboratory, Drury Lane, in the summer of 1969. The John Whiting Award, worth fl,ooo, was instituted in 1965 to commemorate the late John Whiting and his contribution to the post-war British theatre.
