.lock, G. Falloon. A. Harvey. R. Myers, I. Webster, J. Steel, J. i Denton. M. Warren. J. Flemling. 1 Shirley Boys’ High School.— jR. Lodge. R. Dawson. J. Gallagher (captain), C. Lange, M. Rose, M. Williams, S. Scott, G. j Moore, E. Askew, D. Reid. R. Smith, R. MacDonald. W. Uru. ; R. Davidson, G. Ayers. Christchurch Boys' High School dominated the first half and its tally of 15 points at I half-time did not exaggerate its superiority. Although it had scored only two tries, at least three others were lost by silly mistakes. Ward kicked three easy penalties and this testified to the territorial advantage held by his team in this spell. Shirley Boys’ High School had only one opportunity to score in the same period and a poor pass spoilt it. The second half saw a marked contrast, and 90 per cent of the game was played in the Christchurch half. Shirley dominated play and went close to scoring on a number of occasions. On the rare occasions that Christchurch penetrated into Shirley’s half it looked dangerous and scored one try. The Christchurch forwards were too heavy and powerful for the Shirley pack, which gave away a lot of weight. J. Denton, who played well in all phases, gained much line-out ball in the early stages and showed his taller locks how to get up in the air. M. Warren hooked well and gave a good all-round display.

The Shirley forwards struggled manfully, but ineffectually, in the first spell. In the second spell they came alive and bewildered their opponents. At this stage they hunted the ball ruthlessly and were devastating in their driving. Spearheaded by R. Davison they assaulted the Christchurch line time and again, but could not pierce the defence. R. Smith showed that the art of two-handed takes in the lineout is not lost, and he, with W. Uru and E. Askew, supported Davison in salvaging respectability for his team. G. Moore covered well and made some dashing runs. The architect of Christchurch's success was the cap tain, I. Taylor, whose uncanny ability to make the half gap for his outside men opened up tries that too often were frittered away by bad passing or a player hanging on too long with men in support. R. Rennell was a wing threequarter of class. W. Mortlock and Ward combined well, while M. Lewis gave a creditable display in his first game at fullback. Mortlock could well sharpen up his kicking from the base of the scrum. Deprived of a good supply of ball until after half-time, the Shirley backs had little opportunity. M. Williams, given good i service by the young half-back, IS. Scott, showed himself to be a footballer of class. His perfect handling and deceptive movement enabled him to break past his opposite number on occasions and his long, spiral kicks gained large slices of territory. Scott passed well and made some telling breaks I Referee: Mr B. E. Powell.
