Senator Edward Kennedy, fulfilling a promise made last year after the death of Miss Mary Jo Kopechne, announced yesterday that he would seek re-election to a full six-year term in the Senate, ruling himself out of the 1972 Presidential campaign. Senator Kennedy, aged 38, is the Senate majority whip, and one of the most frequently outspoken of antiwar critics. His opponent will be the former Republican state committee chairman (Mr Josiah Spaulding). Senator Kennedy was first elected to the Senate in 1962, in a special election to fill the unexpired term of his brother, President John Kennedy.
