Mauger U.K. Champion, World Title Favourite

New Zealand riders dominated the English speedway championship—the British final of the world solo title—which was held at Wembley Stadium, London, this week.

I. Mauger, of Christchurch, who has held the world title for the last two seasons, took first place with a display which suggests he will, later this season, become the first to win three successive world championships.

His greatest threat came from another Christchurch rider, R. L. Moore, who finally finished runner-up. A former double world champion, Moore is back at the peak of his form and will undoubtedly provide Mauger with one of his chief worries in the world final, to be held on September 6 in Poland. Briggs Was Fifth , B. Briggs, who also comes from Christchurch, has been slightly below form this season but qualified for the European final of the world championship with a modest fifth placing. Last season Briggs won the British championship, with N. Boocock (England) and Moore finishing second and third.

Briggs went on to finish second to Mauger in the world final.

Mauger has again been in tremendous form, but this time it is Moore, regarded by many as the most stylish rider in the sport, who is proving his most serious challenger. Last season was Moore’s first in Europe for six years, and he was feeling his way for the first few months.

Team’s Top Scorer

This season he has proved more than a match for the younger brigade, with the possible exception of Mauger. His team, Wimbledon, is still unbeaten in the British league and Moore is the top scorer in the side. Mauger has won the two major events of the British season so far, the Wills International and the British championship, but Moore has also been placed in both and has beaten Mauger in events of lesser consequence. Teamed together, Mauger

and Moore recently won the world best pairs championship for New Zealand. In this event, Moore led the scoring.
