‘SECURITY RISKS’

Comment By M.P.

The member of Parliament for St Albans (Mr R. P. B. Drayton) .has sent a telegram to the Minister of Finance (Mr Muldoon) asking for clarification of remarks about Defence Department staff made this' week ip Timaru. Mr Muldoon had said that Defence Department staff were the worst security risk in New Zealand, and that anything told to them would be in the press within 48 hours. • -

“Mr Muldoon’s ■ comment impugns improper motives to my still-serving colleagues in the defence' services,” Mr Drayton said iii Christchurch last evening. “I have spent 25 years working with defence forces and I ’ take his remarks as a personal affront.” Mr Drayton said that all persons in the defence services knew well that they were not entitled to make public statements criticising, official policy. He was surprised to see that the Minister of Defence (Mr Thomson) had claimed that Mr Muldoon’s speech had referred to non-officiai organisations connected with defence matters.

“It is tragic to see the Minister of Defence acting as an apologist for the Minister of Finance,” Mr Drayton said.
