Control Of Beaches

Sir, —Last week-end I was warned off the estuary beach of the South Brighton spit, where my children were playing on a go-kart. The traffic officer concerned was acting on complaints from residents of Clifton Hill. I did not know that the Ministry of Transport had jurisdiction over our beaches. Some years ago, when my wife and one of the same children were knocked over by horses while bathing on Sutainer Beach, I could get no action from the police and only polite noises from the City Council.—Yours, JOHN F. JOHNSON.

| June 3, 1970. I [The Director of Reserves (Mr H. G. Gilpin) replies: “The city’s beaches have been under council control since December 2, 1968. City Bylaw No. 50 prohibits motor vehicles from any part of the beach except where prior written permission of the council has been obtained. Ministry of Transport officers, along with other responsible citizens, have been appointed as wardens to assist the council in its enforcement of the by-law.”]
