Piko Not To Race Until September
“The Press” Special Service HAMILTON. The champion three-year-old, Piko, which failed in heavy ground when he made his appearance in the Members’ Handicap (six furlongs) on the first day of the Auckland winter carnival at Ellerslie, will not race again until early in September.
Mr R. A. Robinson, a son of Piko’s part-owner and trianer, Mr I. Robinson, said that Piko would be kept in light work.
This week the horse has been busy as a hack drafting cattle in preparation for the dispersal sale of Mr Robinson’s dairy stock. Piko will not race over the next few weeks because of the higher scale of winter weights. “We will wait for the minimum to drop, in September. He should be fighting fit then
for the big handicaps in the new season,” said Mr Robinson. ■ He added that there had been no further developments in the earlier arrangements for the American part-owner, Mr N. B. Hunt, to have a right of purchase for Mr Robinson’s half-share of Piko. The option expired in March, but Mr Robinson says that he can still buy the horse if he wants him. It seems probable, however, that Piko will be in New Zealand for at least the early part of next season.
