Bishop Dies
(N.Z. Press Association) PALMERSTON NORTH, June 10. Bishop Wiremu Panapa. a former . Bishop of Aotearoa, died in the Palmerston . North Hospital last night. He was 72. Bishop Panapa received his theological training at St John’s College, Auckland, and in 1921 was ordained a deacon. He served three years at the Auckland Maori Mission, and in 1923 was made a priest. He served as a Maori mis-
sionery in Te Kuiti from 1923 until 1926, and in Kaikohe from 1926 to 1932. For 10 years from 1930, he was the Auckland diocesan Maori missioner, and from 1941 to 1944 he was a chaplain to the armed forces. in 1944 he was made vicar of the Ohinemutu Maori pastorate and in 1947 vicar of the Taupo Maori district. In 1951, he was consecrated Bishop of Aotearoa. He retired two years ago.
