MARKET HAS FIRMER TONE IN ACTIVE TRADING

Although rises only just outnumbered falls on the New Zealand stockmarket yesterday, the undertone was very strong, and many leaders made good gains. Trading was active, over a wide range.

N.Z. Forest Products led the New Zealand list: the shares gained 8c to 418 c, and the contributings and ex Hutt shares made proportionate gains. Both breweries were stronger, and South British Insurance also made ground. U.E.8., Wattie, 1.C.1.N.Z., Rothmans, and Trans Holdings were others to have useful gains. C.S.R. gained 50, in line with the Australian trend, but iB.H.P. dragged the overseas [list down, with its loss of 20c to 1620 c.
