School Halls And Elections
Sir, —The statement that “candidates may have the use of school halls free during election campaigns” is a complete myth. In most cases more is asked of candidates for the use of school halls than for other halls. To get round the law, which was presumably intended to aid free debate during elections, the schools claim that the charge is for “cleaning.” I would suggest therefore that “not much use was made of school halls” during the election campaign for the simple reason that they cost more than other halls. I know I cancelled one planned meeting in a school hall because of what seemed to me an exorbitant fee ($6) asked for the use of it.—Yours, etc..
