Bar Trouble At Westport

(From Our Own Reporter) ' WESTPORT, June 3. Because of continued unfavourable bar conditions at Westport, the port was closed to all shipping today. Even the fishing vessels could not go to sea. The position has become serious. One of the Union Steam Ship Company’s colliers, the Kawatiri, has been tied up for 16 days, and the lighter, Titoki, has stayed much longer than usual after arriving in port on Sunday. •The Kawatiri is carrying 2400 tons of coal for Portland and it has been suggested that 800 tons would be transferred to the Anchor company’s ship to enable both to sail for Portland.

However, seas were so rough on the bar yesterday that it was impossible for the Marine Department to take soundings. A major flood is badly needed to scour heavy deposits of sand and the bar.
