WELLINGTON, June 3.
The New Zealand Red Cross Society bad made an immediate gift of $2OOO for Peruvian earthquake relief, the secretary (Commander M. C. Ashdown) said this evening. The money will come from the New Zealand branch of the Red Cross Disaster Relief Appeal, which is based in Geneva, and so it will be immediately available. Commander Ashdown said that the Geneva beadquarters had been in touch with surviving Peruvian Red Cross workers and had issued a general appeal.
Five national Red Cross societies today offered money, medicine and blankets after an appeal by Red Cross headquarters in Geneva for aid for victims of the Peruvian earthquake, says a cable mesage. The supplies are either on their way or being prepared for air shipment which airlines undertake free of charge under an International Air Transport Association agreement A huge international aid operation is expected to be mounted in the next few days' as more societies answer the appeal from the League of Red Cross Societies.
The league has appealed urgently to its 112 member societies for antibiotics, blood plasma, other medical supplies, tents, blankets and clothing.
