Three Styles In Concert
Three different styles ! of composition will be ' featured tonight in a concert arranged in the Hall ‘at 8.30 i p.m. by the Christchurch • Society for Contempor- : ary Music. ’ The Wellington pianist, ’ Margaret Nielson, and the i singer, Ross Mayhew, will be ■ featured in a programme of i! works by Stockhausen. Benja- • min Britten, and .the Auckl land-born composer, Jack Body. , The Stockhausen work in • the concert will be “Klavieri stucke No. 9,” jn which the i resources of the piano are - exploited in terms of modes.
of attack, chord structures, and “echo sounds." This work, and the “Four Stabiles” of Mr Body, who is now studying in Cologne, will make a sharp contrast to the completely tonal song cycle, “Winter Words,” by Britten. Ross Mayhew, who will sing the Britten songs, is well known to Christchurch audiences for his appearances as soloist with the choirs. Miss Nielson, who broadcasts regularly and has given several premiere performances of New Zealand compositions, is a lecturer in music at Victoria University. Born in Hawera, she studied music at the University of Canterbury and at Mills Col- . lege in California.
