(N.Z. Press Association)
WELLINGTON. June 1
The export of live elvers would be restricted in order to safeguard the New Zealand industry, the Minister of Marine and Fisheries (Mr McCready) said. Considerable interest had been shown by Japanese interests in obtaining supplies of elvers for the forthcoming Japanese production season, be said. At the same time, steps were being taken to establish eel cultivation in New Zealand. “It is proposed that during the season only limited quantities of baby eels will be exported under the control of the Fishing Industry Board for experimental purposes,” he said.
