Clarke Back In League Squad

J. G. Clarke (Papanui), the 1966-68 New Zealand Rugby league inside back, who was not available for the representative games against Otago and Auckland because of injury, has returned to the Canterbury squad for the Rugby League Cup challenge against West Coast at Greymouth on June 14.

All 14 players who performed so promisingly against Auckland on Monday have been retained, but the forward reserve, K. G. Walker (Papanui), is replaced by Clarke.

The four players who were thrust into the team to play Auckland because of injuries sustained by the original selections during club matches on Saturday—S. Rolleston (Kaiapoi), H. K. Butler (Papanui), E. Brown (Addington) and K. McDonald (Kaiapoi)—have deservedly retained their places. McDonald Impresses McDonald was particularly impressive with his strong defensive play and powerful running, and now appears assured of a permanent second-row position in the provincial team. Rolleston scored a try after a back-line passing move and kept the deceptive Auckland centre, W. Redmond, contained with sure tackling before retiring injured 18 minutes from fulltime.

His replacement, Butler, did not have much to do in. his short time on the field but his consistent displays for Papanui have earned him re-selection.

Brown’s performance was marred by handling lapses but his potential was evident when a weaving run almost carried him across the tryline in the last minute of play. The team will be decided

after the round of club fixtures on Saturday. The squad is:—
