Final F.O.L. Effort To Stop Tour
(N.Z. Press Association) DUNEDIN, June 2. made by the Federation of Labour to persuade the Government to call on the Rugby Union to cancel the tour of South Africa, the federation secretary (Mr W. J. Knox) said tonight after addressing a closed meeting of the Otago Trade Council. He said the federation would also ask the Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) to meet its national executive to discuss a report believed to have been received from the Department of Foreign Affairs stating that the All Black tour would not in any
way help soften South Africa’s apartheid policy. Mr Knox said the report was understood to indicate that Maoris would be treated as honorary whites in South Africa. “I believe this report should be made public,” he said. “The people of New Zealand are entitled to know what it contained.” The federation believed there would be wide repercussions if the tour went ahead. All future sporting contacts with nations opposed to apartheid would be in danger.
