Labour Shortage

There was a labour shortage on the Lyttelton waterfront when work began at 7 a.m. yesterday. An additional 432 men (19 gangs) would have been required to meet all labour requirements. The Port Adelaide and Port Brisbane were idle while the Suez Maru, Nopal Vega and Amalric were short manned. Included in the 581 men working were 37 non-union members and 46 crew members.
