Softball in I schools !

Almost 3500 pupils from 24 Christchurch secondary schools play softball in either inter-secondary or inter-house competitions.

Three hundred more girls than boys play soft--ball with the largest numbers coming from Linwood High School (500), RanglRuru Presbyterian School for Girls (493), Papanui High School (372), Sacred Heart Girls’ College (350), and Christ’s College (320), traditionally the home of cricket

Although there is a Wednesday girls’ competition at present, there is no similar one for boys and this would appear to be the prime need if the sport is to continue to grow in the future.

Since only slightly more than 100 teachers are responsible for the handling of this large- number, another possibility might be the introduction of a coaching and umpiring school and a simplified rule book.

The game is also firmly entrenched in the seven North Canterbury District High Schools where some 500 pupils play.
