: The officer in charge of the Auckland Central Criminal Investigation Branch (DeItective Chief Inspector W. T. | Cook) said this afternoon that (the police did not rule out the possibility that the explosion was the work of a group of people. “It was a stupid act and I would agree that some persons could be seriously injured or lose their lives if they were unfortunate enough to be in the building at the time of such an explosion,” he said. “ibis was a criminal act. There have been similar criminal acts recently, but whethey are the work of one 'group I would not like to i say ” I Mr Cook accompanied the : national head of the C. 1.8. I (Detective Chief Superintendent R. J. Walton), the (acting-officer in charge of the Auckland police (Chief Superintendent P. A. Byrne), and the regional C. 1.8. supervisor (Detective Superintendent M. J. Ross) to the scene of the explosion. A D.S.I.R. scientist, Dr F. I Nelson, examined the scene early this morning and again in the afternoon. Late tonight police were still looking for a white Ford Anglia car seen driving out of Fox Street immedi-
ately after the blast. A similar car, registered number DD 6467, was stolen late last night from Kohimarama. Mr Cook said the police did not know what caused the explosion, which scattered glass 50 yards from the building. Police had been sifting
