Fewer Births, More Deaths

Fewer births and more deaths were registered in Christchurch this year to the end of May than in the same period last year. However, more marriage notices have been issued and more registry office marriages performed than at the end of May last year. This year 2426 births have been registered compared with 2435 to the end of May, 1969. In May 475 births were registered, 20 fewer than in the previous May. Although 1008 deaths have been registered so far this year, compared with 976 to : the same time last year, fewer deaths were registered last month <237) than in May last year (249). Marriage notices issued so far this year number 1271 (1243 in the same period last year), and registry office marriages number 233, an increase of 29 on the corresponding period last year. There were 191 marriage notices issued and 57 registry office marriages last month, compared with 183 and 37 in May last year.
