Dobbs, Williams In Canterbury Team
(By Our Rugby League Reporter) B. F. Dobbs (Marist-Western Suburbs) will make his first-class debut on the wing and B. Williams (ChristchurchEastern Suburbs) has regained the full-back position, in the Canterbury Rugby league team to play Auckland at the Show Grounds on Monday.
The addition of these two players, and the reverting of G. R. Cooksley (Christchurch-East-ern Suburbs) to scrumhalf and J. G. Clarke (Papanui) to stand-off half, are the only changes made from the team which beat Otago, 29-9, last Sunday.
evaluate his present form against that of E. M. Carson, the Auckland player he succeeded in the Kiwi team last year. INJURY HEALED After training last evening, Clarke said that his leg injury had recovered sufficiently for him to play club football on Saturday. He will face a very difficult assignment on Monday, in opposition to the very experienced R. W. Bailey at stand-off half. K. McDonald and S. Rolleston, the first Kaiapoi players to win representative honours since Williams transferred to Christchurch-Eastern Suburbs at the end of the 1968 season, have been included amongst the five reserves.
The convener of selectors, Mr Butts, said that D. D. Martin (Papanui), had not been available because of a shoulder injury, and two other members of the 21man squad, Jones and W. D. Beri (Marist-Western Suburbs), were not considered because they did not attend training. The team is: Williami-. S. J Wilks (Addington), B. Jager (Hornby). M. P Brereton (Marist - Western Suburbs), Dobbs; Clarke (captain). Cooksley: G. A. Cowan (Addington). R. J. A. MacKenzie (Marist-Western Suburbs), B. F. Gillman (Addington); J. L. White (Addingtonh A W. Thompson (Papanui); R. S. Walker (Papanui*. Reserves: Rolleston, Taylor. McDonald. K. G. Walker (Papanui), K. Wakelin (Papanui).
The strongly-built Dobbs gets his first representative opportunity at the expense of W. H. Taylor (Linwood), who was not impressive against Otago. Williams, a most elusive runner and one of the most successful Canterbury players in the national Rothmans grand final at Auckland last season, takes the place of T. Jones (Hornby). REPLACED CLARKE
Williams was Canterbury’s full-back in the opening match of the season against Wellington and moved up to stand-off half against New South Wales Country when Clarke withdrew because of injury. The experiment of playing Cooksley outside of Clarke against Otago was not a success. Cooksley was very closely marked from set play by the opposing stand-off half, T. W. Patrick, and the trial was aborted when Clarke was forced to retire injured. Cooksley’s return to scrumhalf will give the New Zealand selectors the chance to
