ANTARCTIC CARETAKERS
System Found Successful The Antarctic caretaker system set up by the Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Antarctic Society with the co-operation of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, had proved a great success, the annual meeting of the branch was told. Last year two members of the branch spent part of the summer season at the hut at Cape Royds, assisting tourists and helping in the programme to stop the scattering of the penguin colonies as a result of man’s incursion.
It appeared that the caretaker programme would be continued, allowing more of the branch members to visit the Antarctic, the branch president (Mr H. C. Gray) said in his annual report Of particular advantage to the branch had been the transfer to Christchurch of the Antarctic Division of the D.5.1.R., he said. The co-oper. ation of the division and its director (Mr R. B. Thomson) had been of great help to the society, he said.
