INVERCARGILL, May 25. Three youths spent the night walking to keep warm after they became lost in the Blue Mountains area on Sunday, Constable P. Gilfedder, of Clinton, said today.
The youths walked out fit •nd well this morning. Leslie Nelson Robertson, aged 16, a Clinton farm worker, Errol Shanks, aged 17, and Barry Smythe, also aged 17, both of Balclutha, entered what is known locally as the Black Twenty on Sunday to go shooting.
Constable Gilfedder said they became lost in fog, and walked all night to keep warm. Snow fell throughout the night and during the day in the high country. The trio found a track today and followed it to the forest ranger’s quarters in the Beaumont forest, arriving there at 10.30 a.m. after Search and Rescue forces had been alerted.
“ T he weather during the. night was terribly cold, but| they were well equipped, even | though they were not particularly experienced in this: area,” Constable Gilfedder said.
