Grants For Halls

Government subsidies amounting to more than $570,000 have been granted to the University of Canterbury for the construction of a new hall of residence and the completion of existing buildings. A grant of $150,000 will enable the completion of another stage of Rochester Hall and one of $429,120 has been! granted for the construction of Rutherford Hall. At the meeting yesterday of the university council, the Vice-Chancellor (Professor N. C. Phillips) said that the grants would enable the hall authorities to call tenders immediately and * construction would begin by October 1. He said that he had written to the University Grants Committee seeking clarifica-: tion on the projected buildings in the light of recently announced restrictions on building programming. “I am very hopeful that the building programmer will not intervene in any of these projects,” Professor Phillips said.
