TENNIS FINAL
Germany v. Australia (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) FREIBURG West Germany scored a surprise win over the United States in the Federation Cup women's team tennis championship on Saturday. The West- German girls won, 2- and their opponents in the final will be Australia, which defeated Britain, 3-0, in the other semi-final. Miss P Bartkowicz gave the United States a good start with a 6-2, 6-2, victory over Mrs H Hoesi-Schultze, but* Miss H Niessen put West Germany level by defeating Miss J. Heldman, 6-0. 8-6 The decisive doubles was fiercely battled for two sets, but then Mrs Hoesi-Schultze and Miss Niessen took command to defeat Miss Heldman and Mrs M. Curtis, 7-5, 4-6, 6-0. Results of the other semifinal were;—Miss K. Krantzcke beat Miss J Williams, 6-4, 7-5; Mrs J. Dalton beat Miss V. Wade. 6-4, 4-6, 7-5: and Mrs Dalton and Miss Krantzcke beat Misses Wade and W. Shaw, 6-3. 6-3. In their quarter-finals on Friday. Australia beat Sweden. 3- United States beat South Africa, 3-0, Britain beat The Netherlands, 2-1. and West Germany beat France, 3-0 In the quarter-finals of the Consolation Plate, Japan beat New Zealand. 3-0. Davit Cup Matches Scores of Davis Cup (European zone) ties at the week-end were: Section A—France 3. Austria 0; Jugoslavia 3. Ireland 0: Rumania 3. Greece 0; Spain 3, Bulgaria 0. Semi-final draw: Rumania v. Jugoslavia. France , v. Spain. Section B—West Germany 3, United Arab Republic 0; Russia 3. Monaco 1; Belgium 2, , Finland 1 Semi final draw: Russia v Czechoslovakia. West Germany v Finland or Belgium
