Lunar Halo
Sir,—The report in today’s paper about the lunar halo seen in Christchurch on Wed-
nesday night is slightly incorrect. This type of halo is always caused by refraction in ice crystals and not by diffraction by water droplets. Water droplets are responsible for lunar rainbovs, which are extremely rare in this country and for the much smaller lunar corona or aureole (which is a bright patch of light immediately round the moon), whereas Wednes- ! day’s halo was a bright ring separated from the moon by a much darker band.—Your, ■ etc., J. C. W. DE LA BERE. May 22, 1970.
