SANCTIONS ON RHODESIA Australian Ban On Ammonia Export

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright)

CANBERRA, May 21

Australia has banned the export of 15,000 tons of anhydrous ammonia,-which it suspects is destined for Rhodesia.

The Minister of External Affairs (Mr William McMahon) revealed in Parliament today that the ban—the first direct trade ban in Australia under the United Nations trade sanctions—had been applied. Mr McMahon said that ammonia worth 500,000 dol-

lars had been allegedly destined for Laurenco Marques, in Mozambique, but the Government had been unable to identify its final destination.

Officials said later that the cargo had been loaded in the Norwegian vessel Kristian Birkeland, at present in Newcastle, New South Wales.

They said that the ship would not be able to sail until either the ammonia was unloaded, or the Government was satisfied that it was not destined for Rhodesia. Government sources said the Government believed that some ammonia might have been shipped to Mozambique before. Officials are cheeking to see whether the quantity of ammonia, which is used in fertiliser manufacture, going to Mozambique recently had been in excess of that country's normal requirements.
