TROTTING Sapling Stakes Entries To Run At Addington
Eleven candidates for the $5OOO New Zealand Sapling Stakes to be run at Ashburton next Saturday will contest the Canterbury Park Juvenile Stakes at Addington Raceway this evening. They include most of the fancied candidates for the Ashburton race and their appearances will be the highlight of the night.
In particular, interest will centre in the speedy Upper Hutt filly, Scottish Cheer, the winner of four races and the fastest of her sex in New Zealand with a mile in 2:7 1-5 when she finished second to Lumber a few weeks ago.
Scottish Cheer, by the former top pacer, Scottish Command, will start from 24 yards, a mark she shares with Violetta, the winner of five ■aces, and New Law, the winier of two.
Violetta is one of the speediest of her age in Canterbury. She has won the New Zealand Welcome Stakes and the Leonard Memorial Stakes at Rangiora at her latest starts A win in this race W'ould be penalty-free for her. New Law recorded a fin; trial for this race when h< returned 2min 42sec for It furlongs at last week’s trialat Addington. If he race with the same dash, he wil take a prominent part in thr finish. He will be bracketed with Royal Ascot, which will be having his first start at a total isator meeting. He has taken all before him at trials and has shown outstanding ability.
His five wins at trials ensure that he will have bright prospects of extending the splendid record this season of horses trained at Methven by his part-owner, C. J. Me Laughlin, who races him in partnership with the Templeton trainer, F. E. Newfield.
Royal Ascot is one of the top early fancies for the Sapling Stakes, but to be certain of a start in the Ashburton classic he will need to finish in the first three in this race.
Mickey Dhu finished second to New Law at the trials, where his bracketed mate, Royal Belmer, created a good impression when she qualified with ease. Both should be prominent, as should the Oamaru Juvenile Stakes winner, Noble Hanover, Lee
Frost, Candy Frost, and Tiawana.
