A YACHT OF THE BIG CLASS.—The Velsheda seems to pursue her shadow through the spray thrown up by. her bow wave as she leads the Shamrock V up the Solent. Looking at the Velsheda. framed by the clouds and a white-capped sea, the passion of owners and crews for racing in the “Big Class" can be understood. When this picture was taken, the great days of the great yachts were moving on, and under clouds of canvas they were already sailing into the past. However, two photographers were at hand to record the days of the big yachts, calling for large crews and almost ruinous expenditure. These days are recalled by the beautiful and evocative photographs which fill “Beken of Cowes 2: 1919-1939.” The text of a record of yachting in the years between the two world wars was written by Alain Gliksman, with collaborators, and the photographs were made by experienced and exceedingly skilful photographers of sea and ships, the Beken brothers. Frank and Keith. The publishers of the second volume of the “Beken of Cowes” series are Cassell.
