FRUIT FOR U.S.

(N.Z. Press Association >

GISBORNE, May 22.

The quality of fruit loaded in New Zealand for the United States was “very good,” said an inspector from the plant quarantine division of the United States Department of Agriculture (Mr J. Manley) today. He is at present in Gisborne to watch the loading of 34,000 cases of apples aboard the freighter Pacific Express for the United States and Canada.

Usually, fruit would be inspected on its arrival in the United States, said Mr Manley, but on this occasion the New Zealand Apple and Pear Marketing Board had invited his department to inspect the fruit before it was loaded.

This would result jn a saving in time and expense for the New Zealand board, Mr Manley said.
