RISING COSTS

Extension To Museum

The construction of the Canterbury Museum’s proposed Centenary wing is expected to cost $lOO,OOO more than the original estimates. In his report to a meeting of the Museum Trust Board the director (Dr R. S. Duff), said that the net building costs at today’s rates would be $400,000. “But with the addition of professional fees, the salary of the clerk of works and the expected inflationary spiral during the next two years, a capital requirement of $500,000 can be anticipated,” he said.

“In spite of the large sum involved, howerer, we can approach the public with the confidence inspired by the success of the appeal for the provincial centennial memorial wing in 1958. In the succeeding 12 years the board and staff have restored the museum as an exciting place to visit.”
