WIDTH OF TAR SEAL
Safety Aspect
On Hills
The saving with a 12ft seal might be more apparent than real, the council’s consulting engineer (Mr N. S. Sutherland) told a meeting of the Mount Herbert County Council yesterday.
The council had thoughts of using a 12ft seal in reconstructing and sealing about a mile of the road from Purau to Port Levy, but Mr Sutherland said the narrow seal could be dangerous on hill roads.
Many miles of reads on the flat plains had been sealed to 12ft, but visibility here was good. The widening of 12ft seals was being done by many councils. A 14ft seal had been used, said Mr Sutherland, but this width was deceptive, as cars could only pass with care on the tar seal. With narrow seals there was a problem with road shoulders, affected by vehicles pulling off the seal to pass, and a hazard on blind corners. The chairman (Mr E. R. Radcliffe) asked Mr Sutherland to give the council comparative costs for different sealing widths, and his recommendations. He said it was hoped to have the reconstruction completed by Christmas.
